Confused? Glossary of Wedding Terms

One thing that I did not account for when starting my wedding planning career was actually how little people know about weddings and wedding terminology. For example, I had a groom a few months back that thought the first look just meant that they were seeing each other before - he didn't realize that the first look was the actual event!

So I thought I would type up a list of the usual culprits that trip my couples up when we are having a conversation about their wedding:

Boutonniere: Small Flowers that get pinned to the lapel of a suit jacket - usually for groom, groomsmen, fathers and grandfathers

Bustle: The hooks or snaps on the back of the wedding dress that are used to tie up the train for the reception so the bride isn't dragging the dress all night

Charger: Nope not your phone charger - this is a decorative plate - usually 13'' round that goes underneath the dinner plate - it is for decoration.

Corsage: Small Flowers for wrist or pinned to dress - usually for moms and grandmothers

First Look: Event where Bride and Groom see each other before wedding - usually in a quiet, secluded area - groom has his back turned and bride walks up and taps him on the shoulder

Head Table: Where the Bride and Groom and Bridal Party sits during the reception

Officiant: The person who performs your wedding ceremony

Posey or Nosegay: Small Bunch of Flowers tied together that usually attaches to the ceremony chairs

Processional: When the Grandparents, Parents, Bridal Party and Bride walk down the aisle at the beginning of the ceremony

Recessional: When the couple and bridal party walk out of the ceremony down the aisle at the end of the ceremony

Sweetheart Table: Private Table for 2 where the Bride and Groom sit together vs. having a head table

Toss Bouquet: A small bouquet provided by your florist usually at no cost that the bride uses for the bouquet toss

Abbreviations:

FOB: Father of Bride

MOB: Mother of Bride

FOG: Father of Groom

MOG: Mother of Groom

FG: Flower Girl

RB: Ring Bearer

BM: Best Man

MOH: Maid/Matron of Honor
